If you’ve ever printed a PDF sewing pattern at home, you’ll know the drill: dozens of A4 pages, each one trimmed to remove the margin, then taped together edge to edge until your kitchen table disappears under something that looks vaguely like a dress front. It works, but it eats an evening before you’ve cut a single piece of fabric. We’ve had a few customers come to us recently for exactly this reason — they’d rather buy a printer that does the job in one pass than tape together “twelfty gazillion” A4 sheets ever again.

Why makers are switching to large format printers

Most indie sewing patterns are now sold as PDFs with an “A0” or “copyshop” layout — a single full-size sheet rather than a tiled, multi-page one. Print that file on an A0-capable printer and the pattern comes out at 100% scale, ready to cut around, with no trimming or taping at all. It’s the same idea print shops and copy shops use to print patterns for people who don’t own one themselves — except once you own the printer, every future pattern costs you a sheet of paper and a few minutes, not a print shop fee and a wait.

Which printer do you actually need?

This comes down to how your patterns are sized:

• Canon TM-340 or TM-350 (A0, 36-inch) — the right choice if you want true 100% scale printing straight from the PDF, no tiling or scaling down. Most A0 copyshop pattern files are designed for exactly this width.
• Canon TM-240 or TM-250 (A1, 24-inch) — a smaller, less expensive option if you’re happy printing at A1 or your patterns are supplied in an A1 layout. It won’t fit a full A0 sheet at 100% scale, so check what size your usual pattern sources provide before choosing this route.

What else you need alongside the printer

The printer is most of the job, but not all of it:

• The right paper. Sewing patterns print best on a lightweight, semi-translucent paper (much lighter than standard CAD paper) so you can see your fabric grain and markings through it when laying the pattern out. This isn’t something we list on the website, as it’s a more specialist line, so just get in touch and we’ll sort out the right roll for your printer.
• A roll core size that matches your printer. Canon TM printers take a 3-inch core roll as standard — if a paper you’ve seen elsewhere is 2-inch core, you’ll need an adapter or roll holder to use it, so it’s worth checking before you order.
• Nothing else, really. There’s no special software involved — you print a sewing pattern exactly like any other PDF, straight from your laptop. The only setting worth double-checking is that your print dialog is set to actual size / 100%, not “fit to page,” which would scale your pattern down and throw off every measurement.
