The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner scans colour in 15 cm/sec (6 in/sec) and grayscale as 33 cm/sec (13 in/sec). The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner scans up to 42 inches/1067 mm and a media thickness of up to 15 mm/0.6 in. The maximum scan sizes are 0 .91 x 26 m (36 x 1204 in), 0.6 x 37.9 m (24 x 1491 in), and 0.3 x 75.8 m (12 x 2991 in). The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner can accept a media width of up to 44 inches (1118mm) and a media thickness of up to 0.6 inch (15mm).

The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner supports PDF, TIFF, JPEG, JPEG 2000, DWF, CALS (B&W), and multi-page PDF generation. The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner features a straight-through scan paper path for sheet and cardboard originals and an adjustable paper pressure for very thin media. Documents are fed face-down, front entry and rear exit. HP document return guides allow for rewind, front-return. The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner features an automatic height adjustment of its scanner bridge for thick originals.

The HP HD Pro 42-in Scanner accepts non-abrasive paper, vellum, Mylar, sepia, blueprints, plastic, film, plastic laminate, foam board, cardboard, newspaper, and tracing paper including varying condition documents including old, delicate, folded, creased, crumpled and damaged originals.
