Mutoh Large Format Printers: Eco-Solvent and UV LED, Explained

Mutoh doesn’t get talked about as often as Canon, Epson or HP, but it’s a serious option if signage, banners, vehicle graphics or direct-to-object printing are part of your business — and our range covers a lot of ground, from a budget desktop model right up to a 64-inch production printer. Here’s a rundown of what’s actually in the Mutoh line-up, and which part of it is likely to suit you.

Eco-Solvent or UV LED — What’s the Difference?

The two ink technologies in the Mutoh range solve different problems, and it’s worth understanding the distinction before you start comparing models.

Eco-solvent inks are absorbed into the surface of flexible roll media and cured with heat as the print progresses. This is the workhorse technology behind most vinyl banners, vehicle wraps, wallpaper and outdoor signage — it’s durable, relatively low-cost to run, and the media itself stays flexible after printing, so it can be applied to curved and contoured surfaces without cracking.

UV LED inks sit on top of the substrate and are cured almost instantly by UV LED lamps built into the print carriage. Because there’s no need for the ink to soak in, UV LED printers can work on a far wider range of materials — rigid boards, acrylic, wood, phone cases, promotional items — as well as roll media, and can even build up a slight texture for spot-varnish or braille-style effects. The trade-off is that cured UV ink is more rigid than eco-solvent, so very tight folds or flexes can cause cracking on some substrates.

Quick way to decide: if the job is mostly banners, vehicle wraps or outdoor roll-fed signage, eco-solvent is the natural fit. If you need to print onto rigid items, promotional products or a mix of flexible and rigid substrates on one machine, UV LED opens up more of that work.

Who Tends to Choose Which

Sign makers and vehicle wrap installers running mostly roll media generally land on the eco-solvent side — the 1341SR PRO or 1641SR PRO for steady volume, or the 1681SR Pro if colour accuracy on brand work is a priority. Businesses producing point-of-sale displays, promotional merchandise or a mix of rigid and flexible jobs tend to get more use out of the UV LED models, since one printer can cover both a foam board sign and a batch of branded phone cases. If you’re not sure which category your workload actually falls into, that’s exactly the kind of question worth talking through before you buy rather than after.
