Large Format Printing News & Tips
A big flatbed investment from Hollywood Monster, a new paint protection film range at William Smith, fresh cutting kit at Soyang, and a new report on what’s really driving purchasing decisions in wide format — plus a practical look at sustainable large format printing: where it’s genuinely worth starting, and where it’s just marketing talk.

Hollywood Monster invests in a 5.2m EFI VUTEk X5r flatbed
Display specialist Hollywood Monster has bought a 5.2-metre-wide EFI VUTEk X5r from CMYUK, aimed at boosting output, automating finishing and lowering production costs as the business scales up its large-format display and exhibition work — a sign that confidence in big-ticket hardware investment is still strong heading into 2027.
William Smith adds Avery Dennison ADfend Pro to its PPF range
Vehicle wrap specialist William Smith has introduced Avery Dennison’s ADfend Pro paint protection film in gloss and matte finishes, pitched on faster installation times — worth knowing if PPF work sits alongside your wrap and livery jobs, or if you’re thinking about adding it.
Soyang invests in a VeloBlade Nexus 3016 digital cutter
Soyang Europe has bought a VeloBlade Nexus 3016 digital cutting table for its new Lancashire showroom, due to open in early 2027 — another reminder that finishing kit is increasingly as much a part of the showroom pitch as the printers themselves.
Report: over half of print businesses now rate sustainability as crucial to purchasing
A new Keypoint Intelligence report, covered by WhatTheyThink, finds that more than half of print service providers now see sustainability as a crucial factor in their own business and purchasing decisions — pointing to recyclable PP/PET substrates, lower-VOC ink chemistries and certifications such as FSC and the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership as the areas customers are asking about most.
Tips: sustainable large format printing – 5 places to actually start
With that report putting a number on something a lot of you have been hearing from customers directly, it’s worth being clear-eyed about which changes make a real difference and which are just marketing talk. Here’s where we’d suggest starting:
- Rethink your default substrate. Standard PVC banner and vinyl is cheap and durable, but recyclable polypropylene (PP) and PET-based media now perform close to the equivalent PVC products for most signage and display work. If a client asks about recyclability, this is usually the easiest substitution to make without retooling your printer.
- Match the ink chemistry to the claim you’re making. Water-based, latex and UV-curable inks all produce far lower VOC emissions than solvent inks, and most of the Canon, Epson and HP large format ranges we supply are already built around one of these chemistries — so the sustainability win may already be sitting in the machine on your floor.
- Nest and gang jobs properly. The single biggest waste reduction most shops can make costs nothing: use your RIP’s nesting tools to gang multiple jobs onto one roll width instead of running them separately, and size media to the job rather than defaulting to the widest roll in stock.
- Use the recycling schemes that already exist. Canon and Epson both run cartridge collection and recycling programmes for large format consumables — worth signing up to if you haven’t, and worth mentioning to customers who ask what happens to your waste.
- Get the paperwork that backs up the claim. FSC certification on paper media and credentials like the Sustainable Green Printing Partnership are increasingly what clients actually check before awarding tender-based work, rather than taking a verbal assurance at face value.
